Caroline Wozniacki won the WTA Finals title after beating Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4 at Singapore Indoor Stadium. It is the Dane’s biggest achievement and second title of the year after claiming the 2017 Toray Pan Pacific Open.
“Going into the tournament you know that it’s going to be a tough one. I’m really proud of how I have played all week and how I have fought and how I really produced some great fighting out there”, Wozniacki said during the press conference.
She added, “To be here with the trophy means a lot, and it’s a great way to finish off the year. I was hoping that if I’m going to beat her (Williams) at least once in my career it had to be today. I just went out there and I just did my best.”
Wozniacki took around 90 minutes to defeat its American opponent. Venus Williams won all seven previous matches against Danish tennis player. “Well, eight is my lucky number and I figured if I was ever going to beat her it would be today … and I just went out there and did my best.”, Wozniacki said.
The 27-yr old also added, “I’m still shaking. I was up 5-0, everything was going well, and all of a sudden, Venus just starts upping her game. She went for her shots, she started serving to my body, and I’m just so happy that I managed to win in the end.”
Venus Williams, who won WTA Finals title in 2008, said, “I didn’t seem to come up with my best tennis until it was too late. I’ll try to play a little better earlier next time. That might be a good plan.” The American tennis player also praised Wozniacki by saying, “She (Wozniacki) played really well the whole match”.
