Recently, Forbes has ranked the world’s highest-paid athletes of the year 2017. The most interesting part is that out of 100 highest-paid athletes, 63 athletes are Americans; all thanks to high salaries provided by National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball and National Football League.
The earnings are calculated on the basis of salaries, endorsements, prize money, licensing income, appearance fees and bonuses received between 1 June 2016 and 1 June 2017. Here is a list of top 10 world’s highest-paid athletes 2017 ranked by Forbes magazine.
- Cristiano Ronaldo:
Cristiano Ronaldo, a popular football player of Portugal has obtained the first rank in the list of world’s highest paid athletes. He got the salary of $58 million from Real Madrid and $35 million from sponsors. Thus, in total, he earned $93 million in the past 12-month period sssss(June 2016-June 2017).
- LeBron James:
After receiving $31 million salary, LeBron James of USA has become the 3rd NBA player after Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan to earn $30 million in a season. It is the highest amount of salary that he received from NBA during his 14-year career. He banked total amount of $86.2 million after the addition of his playoff bonuses and endorsements.
- Lionel Messi:
Lionel Messi is the third highest paid athlete 2017 in the world with the earnings of $80 million, out of which $27 million has been endorsed by the German sportwear giant Adidas. The Argentine footballer is also offered a 5-year contract from the video game developer EA Sports.
- Roger Federer:
The world-famous tennis player of Switzerland earned $64 million in the past season. He got a serious knee injury in 2016, due to which he was unable to play for the second half of the year but he came back to tennis court in 2017 with a victory of Australian Open over his competitor Rafael Nadal.
- Kevin Durant:
Kevin Durant ranked fifth on the list with the $60.6 million earnings. The US basketball player has won many awards for the Golden State Warriors of NBA. He has endorsement deals with Panini, Sparkling Ice, American Family Insurance, Nike, BBVA etc.
- Andrew Luck:
Andrew luck, a quarterback of NFA, is a new comer in the list of world’s highest paid athletes. He got total $50 million earnings including salary of $47 million and $3 million endorsements. Last summer, he signed a $123 million contract extension with a signing bonus of $32 million.
- Rory McIlroy:
Rory McIlroy shares 6th rank with Andrew luck due to same earnings of $50 million. The Northern Irish golfer won 2 events in the PGA tour playoffs that help him in earning bonus of $10 million. The endorsement partners of McIlroy are TaylorMade, Upper Deck, Nike and Omega.
- Stephen Curry:
The famous basketball player of NBA has $47.3 million earnings, thanks to numerous endorsement deals in China. Stephen’s income will be increased this year as he is likely to re-sign a contract of over $200 million with Golden State Warriors.
- James Harden:
He has the earnings of $46.6 million in this past season. An amount of $10 million is added to 2016-17 salary of the Harden when the Rockets renegotiated the last 2- years of contract. The American basketball player has signed endorsement deals with BodyArmor, Foot Locker, Beats and NBA 2K.
- Lewis Hamilton:
The British racecar driver earned $46 million in a period of last 12 months (June 2016-June 2017). The endorsement partners of Lewis Hamilton are MV Agusta Motorcycles, Puma, Bose, L’Oreal, Monster Energy and Bombardier Recreational Products.
